Spanish La Liga leaders Real Madrid host English Premier League side Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in one of the most anticipated Champions League Round of 16 ties.
Zinedine Zidane’s side have been helped by Barcelona’s inconsistencies to top their domestic league, but they only came through their group as runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain – finishing five points behind.
Real Madrid did manage 14 goals in their six group games, but were shut out in their 0-3 thrashing away to PSG. They have not looked so impressive going forward domestically, scoring 46 goals in their 25 league games.
Karim Benzema is still the only player with more than three league goals for the Spanish giants so far this season. Should Pep Guardiola’s side successfully cut the supply off to the striker then they will be in good stead to progress from this tie.
As for Manchester City, they are out of the Premier League title race and could potentially be out of Champions League action for the following two seasons as a suspension looms over their head.
Although they have the EFL Cup final coming up and are still in the FA Cup, Guardiola’s focus has to fully be on this competition now.
The Citizens comfortably won their group with 14 points – twice as many as Atalanta in second spot. I really like their chances of at least getting a positive result, if not winning away to Real Madrid this week.
I don’t think Real Madrid’s defence is as good as their record suggests, and PSG have already put five past them in the group stage. City’s attack are certainly good enough to notch up a couple in the Spanish capital too. The bookmakers actually have them as the slight favourites too.
