The two winners from matchday one in Group H go head-to-head at the Mestalla on Wednesday when Valencia entertain Ajax.
Valencia were 1-0 winners away to Chelsea in their opening game, aided by Ross Barkley’s missed penalty late on for the English Premier League side, whilst Ajax hammered Lille 3-0 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.
Last season’s semi-finalists lost Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong over the summer but managed to keep the rest of the stars in their squad. After starting the Eredivisie with a draw, they have won six of their next seven, only dropping points with a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven.
I can’t promise they’re going to reach the final four again this season but the Dutch giants continue to look very well. I can’t see PSV or anyone else topping them domestically this season.
Meanwhile, Valencia recorded only their second La Liga win in seven attempts on Saturday with a 1-0 victory away to Athletic Bilbao.
Marcelino’s side have dropped points at home to both Leganes and Getafe already this season and have been hammered 5-2 at Barcelona. I wouldn’t be surprised if this Ajax attack get the better of them midweek too.
Ajax have back-to-back games against Chelsea after this one so avoiding defeat in Valencia is going to be important, whilst three points would go a huge way towards progressing from the group.
I think Ajax have the attacking talent to control this game and even take three points on the road.
